For years, community bank marketing has relied on a familiar formula: segment customers by age, income, geography or account type, develop a campaign and send it to everyone who fits the profile. It works. But it leaves an enormous opportunity on the table.
That’s because your customers are already telling you what they may need next. The clues are sitting inside the customer information your bank already possesses: the products they use, the balances they maintain, the loans they carry and, importantly, the changes taking place in their financial lives. The question has become: is your marketing team listening?
This is where machine learning (ML) and generative AI are transforming bank marketing at a barely imaginable speed. Rather than simply using customer data to describe who a customer is, ML can analyze patterns in that data to determine the probability that a customer will take a particular action or have a particular financial need. For example, suppose your bank's first-party data shows that a customer:
- has a 48-month auto loan that's 42 months old
- regularly maintains a certain level of deposits
- has previously financed vehicles with the bank
- has a history of making payments on time, and
- is approaching a point when customers with similar characteristics frequently replace their vehicles.
An ML model can identify that this customer resembles other customers who subsequently sought an auto loan. It can assign a probability or “propensity score” to that customer and potentially trigger a marketing workflow. The distinction? It isn't saying: "John is going to buy a car in six months." It's saying something more like: "Customers with these characteristics have a higher-than-average likelihood of seeking an auto loan in the near future."
Then what happens? Instead of waiting for the customer to walk into the branch, or sending a generic "Ready for a new car?" campaign to thousands of customers, the bank could use that insight to trigger a timely, relevant communication. Something as simple as: “Thinking about your next vehicle? Let's talk about your financing options.” In other words, your marketing is becoming less about guessing and more about anticipating. Another way of putting it? Your marketing is becoming less reactive and more proactive.
Another example? Suppose interest rates fall and a customer's existing mortgage or other loan meets criteria that could make refinancing worth considering. Why should the customer have to discover that opportunity themselves? An AI-powered marketing automation system can identify customers whose circumstances suggest that a refinance conversation may be appropriate and automatically trigger an invitation to explore options with their community banker.
The NBA (Next-Best Action)
The broader concept here is often called next-best-action (NBA) marketing: using customer data and predictive analytics to develop a “predictive persona” that will help determine which message, offer, or interaction may be most relevant to a particular customer at a particular time. Is it effective? Studies say yes.
A 2025 study of 200 banking customers found that AI-powered predictive analytics can improve personalization and, in turn, customer experience and satisfaction. The researchers concluded that AI-driven personalization can help strengthen customer relationships and trust. “Personalization powered by AI not only makes service better, but it also develops trust and long-term relationships with customers. This study adds to both academic literature and banking practice by showing how important AI is for determining the future of digital consumer interactions.”1
But prediction isn't permission
There is an important caveat. Customer PII (Personally Identifiable Information) is extraordinarily sensitive, and banks need to be thoughtful about privacy, data governance, fair lending, discrimination, and the permissible use of customer information.
There's also a fundamental difference between identifying a potential need and assuming you know what a customer wants. If an ML model identifies a customer as having a higher propensity for refinancing, the bank shouldn't tell that customer, "You need to refinance." It should instead take a more nuanced approach with, say: "Based on your circumstances, you may want to explore whether refinancing could benefit you. Here's how to find out."
The future of bank marketing is remarkably personal
Generating clever copy and creating social media posts faster are certainly valuable applications of AI (which, by the way, are two key features of the Bank Marketing Center web-based marketing platform). But its most powerful contribution to marketing automation may be knowing when to say something and to whom.
Community banks already possess a wealth of first-party customer information. Machine learning can help identify patterns within that information and estimate the likelihood of future behaviors or needs. Generative AI and marketing automation, through the creation of predictive personas, can then turn those insights into timely, personalized communications. Done well, the result isn't marketing that feels more automated. It feels more human.
